NOTE: Since April 2020, we have been offering every one of our presentations and trainings in virtual modalities (e.g., Zoom, WebEx, Teams). Reach out if you need specifics, as we’ve optimized the way we engage with our audiences from afar!

This training will help parents, educators, and other youth-serving adults understand how online environments can contribute to easy, quick, and unauthorized access to substances that are often unsafe and sometimes even deadly. Attendees will learn about the the methods by which dealers operate, the impact of fentanyl on the drug trade, the relative ubiquity of counterfeit pills, and how to identify digital drug-related slang, symbols, and messages. We also discuss how parents and other youth-serving adults can implement effective monitoring strategies, engage in open dialogue with their children, and collaborate with schools, policymakers, and platforms to address the problem at hand. Through anonymous flash polling, visual examples, case studies, research findings, and data-driven insights, the session will level-set, inform, and share actionable prevention and response approaches to leave attendees empowered to better safeguard the youth in their lives.

Key issues discussed: adolescence, developmental pressures and stressors, social media features and functionality, substance use and abuse, fentanyl, counterfeit pills, drug slang and symbols, prevention and response
